Shaman - Artist's Statement
Shamanism is the ability to shape shift, to turn oneself into something else like a bird, an animal or esoteric being. Shamanism is probably the oldest known spiritual discipline in the world. Visible signs of its practice, such as cave paintings and ornaments have been discovered in The Americas, Australia, Siberia and Europe dating back to the dawn of history.
This series of pastels was inspired by my trip through Mexico and Guatemala. Shamanism and the Corn Goddess are central to the Mayan Indian belief system even today. The colours are those that represent these countries to me – oranges, reds and warm yellows.
